2013 Jazz Residency Workshop
Derek Cannon - Trumpet
November 4-7, 2013
Funding provided by the First Friday Club
Congratulations to our Jazz Ensemble on their work and performances during the 2013 Jazz Artist in Residency Workshop. This year’s Artist, Derek Cannon, spent time with our ensemble Monday through Thursday sharing his experience, knowledge and love of jazz music with our ensemble students.
The Jazz Ensemble Students attended three days of workshops with Mr. Cannon where they were able to refine their approach to performance of various jazz styles and improvisation.
Student also worked in small groups with other professional musicians in the San Diego area, including saxophonist, John Rekevics, Bassist, Glen Fisher, Drum Carlos Vazquez, and Keyboardist Anthony Smith. These musicians held our students accountable for working at the highest level and only accepted high quality results much like professional musicians in the jazz performance field.
Our students stepped up to the challenge and the Residency Program culminated in three performances given on Thursday November 7, 2013. Students performed their music for the Correia Student Body during afternoon assemblies and then performed along side with the Glen Fisher Trio Thursday night at club Tango del Rey in Pacific Beach.
For many this was the first time performing in a venue such as this and alongside professional musicians. The jazz students came away from the week inspired, confident, and better jazz musicians. Students and parents alike enjoyed the week and will remember it for a long time!
Thank you First Friday Club for funding this experience and bringing this opportunity to our students.
